Gov. Hobbs signs ‘Grandpa in the Garden’ bill, paving way for human composting in Arizona
Arizona approved a new eco-friendly option for disposing of human remains through human composting or natural organic reduction, recently signed into law by Gov. Katie Hobbs.
This process, offered by companies like Earth Funeral, transforms remains into fertile soil suitable for gardening. Founder Tom Harries highlights its gentler and more environmentally friendly nature compared to traditional cremation or burial methods. The cost of human composting, around $5,000, is significantly lower than traditional burials, which can exceed $12,000, making it an attractive option for many.
Arizona is the eighth state to approve human composting, with other states considering similar legislation.
