Man who lived frugally leaves unexpected gift of $3.8 million to small New Hampshire town after death
Geoffrey Holt of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, left a surprising $3.8 million gift to the town upon his death.
Holt lived modestly in a trailer park but had a fortune from a trust fund he established in 2001. The funds are now with the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. They will be used for grants benefiting the town, potentially funding projects such as electronic voting machines and repairing the town hall clock.
Holt's generosity is seen as transformative for the small community, and the funds will support health, education, recreation, and culture initiatives. Despite his preference for staying out of the limelight, Holt's friend emphasized his joy in knowing the town appreciates his gift.
