Dementia Caregivers Have a Steep Learning Curve. Here’s How to Catch Up—Fast.

Estate planningFor caregivers of those with dementia, there are a growing number of professionals who can provide one-on-one training where they share tips, tricks, and techniques for caregivers to polish their skills. These professionals are sometimes known as Dementia Doulas.

Experts recommend the importance of learning about dementia sooner, rather than later. Springing into action when a patient first gets a diagnosis is important rather than waiting before symptoms become difficult to manage can make a major difference in quality of care.

One of the top lessons is for caregivers is to listen for the feelings a patient expresses rather than simply the words they say. Beyond one-on-one coaching, there are self-study guides, workshops, and online courses available.
