Reports indicate that the bill has even broader support in the Maine House of Representatives which is scheduled to consider the bill on May 5, 2009.
Maine Governor John Baldacci has spoken out in the past against same-sex marriage but he is reported to be keeping an open mind as to whether he would veto the legislation.
If the legislation becomes law, opponents to same-sex marriage plan to ask for a public referendum to be held in June 2010 to see if the citizens of Maine wish to prohibit same-sex marriage. They will also try to suspend the effective date of the legislation until after the referendum.
