Legal Writing Conference in South Africa

South_africaAppealMimi Samuel, Co-President of APPEAL (Academics Promoting the Pedagogy of Effective Advocacy in Law), has just shared the news that APPEAL and the University of Pretoria Faculty of Law in South Africa will hold a Conference on Promoting the Teaching of Legal Writing in Southern Africa from July 1 to July 4, 2009, in Pretoria, South Africa.  The conference will focus on the development of curricula in legal writing for law faculties in Southern Africa, with particular emphasis on handling large, undergraduate class loads and teaching to students with a variety of language and educational backgrounds.

Samuel_mimi The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • June 29, 30, and July 1:  Optional "field trips" for out-of-town participants, possibly including the Apartheid Museum, Constitutional Hill, High Court and/or Magistrate Court in Pretoria, Pilanesburg Game Park 
  • July 1 (evening):  Welcome reception
  • July 2-3:  Full day conference
  • July 4:  Half-day conference

The conference fee for U.S. participants is a very modest $125.  African participants will not be charged a conference fee.  A limited amount of scholarship money will be available to assist participants with transportation and accommodation costs.  Participants will pay their own way for the optional field trips.

Dear Mimi Smuel,
Please, I am interested in attending this conference as a participant from Nigeria. I am a Law Lecturer and I work at The LAGOS State University. If eligible I may however only be able to attend if there is scholarship for transportation and accomodation. Thank you
