Emily Dickinson on Poets--and Teachers

Here is one of Emily Dickinson’s well known poems. If we substitute “teachers” for “poets,” we can appreciate her imagery even more.

The Poets light but Lamps—
Themselves—go out—
The Wicks they stimulate—
If vital Light

Inhere as do the Suns—
Each Age a Lens
Disseminating their
Circumference—
