Passing Of Tom Henderson

I send along to the ethics community the sad news of the passing of Tom Henderson.

Tom served as Bar Counsel in the District of Columbia as the successor to the court's first Bar Counsel, the beloved Fred Grabowsky.

From the Washington Post obituary

Tom met Robert Kennedy, Jr. while attending the University of Alabama and at his urging, he went to Washington DC where he began his 17 year career with the United States Justice Department. He held several senior positions with the Justice Department and during his tenure he served as the Chief of the Public Integrity Section, where he was responsible for corruption prosecutions in the United States. After leaving the Justice Department, Tom served for four years as the Bar Counsel of the District of Columbia where he prosecuted any of the 60,000 members of the District of Columbia Bar for misconduct. In 1988, Tom became the Chief Executive of the American Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA) now named the American Association for Justice (AAJ). During his 18 year tenure with ATLA/AAJ Tom was a fearless and passionate advocate to safeguard victim''s rights and strengthen the civil justice system.

Among the many achievements not listed in his impressive life history, Tom hired Ross Dicker, Elizabeth Branda, Elizabeth Herman and myself as Assistant Bar Counsel.

Together, those four hires put in over 100 years of service in the D. C. bar disciplinary system and have had a significant impact on the law of lawyering and discipline in the Nation's Capital.

I'm the slacker, having left after 17 1/2 years for the greener pastures of Georgetown Law.

My life certainly was forever changed that day in January 1984 when Tom took me to lunch at the Old Ebbitt Grill near the White House and offered me a position as an assistant bar counsel.

Condolences to all his friends and family. (Mike Frisch)
