The Republic of Palau (Belau) became an independent country on October 1, 1994. Palau had previously been a Strategic Trust Territory of the United Nations administered by the United States. I had the honor of serving as Court Counsel for the Republic of Palau during the year that it became an independent country. In many ways, it was the best year of my life. Thank you, Palau, and happy national day.
