New Maritime Labour Convention Takes Effect

ILOThe International Labor Organization (ILO) has announced that its new convention, the Maritime Labour Convention (text), received enough ratifications to take effect as of August 20, 2013.  To date, 45 ILO members have ratified the Convention, representing 70% of the world's gross shipping tonnage. (Ratificaton information can be found here. According to the ILO press release, the new convention will ensure decent living and working conditions for seafaring workers and fair competition for ship owners.
