Sworn in as U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi called for the Justice Department to fully support President Trump’s effort to crack down on illegal immigration, using “all available criminal statutes.” She also called for the department to support the Department of Homeland Security. Bondi’s memo follows an earlier internal directive instructing FBI-led terrorism task forces across the country to re-focus on immigration.

On her first day in office, Bondi sought to cut funding to sanctuary jurisdictions.  “[T]he Department of Justice will ensure that, consistent with law, ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ do not receive access to Federal funds from the Department,” Bondi’s first-day memo says.  Similar efforts at de-funding sanctuary jurisdictions led to litigation in President Trump's first term.

Changes in personnel at the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) began before Bondi took office.  The EOIR, and the entire immigration court system, is housed in the Department of Justice.  The Attorney General may intervene in matters before the Board of Immigration Appeals.  Past Trump Attorney Generals Jeff Sessions and William Barr intervened in a number of matters and set restrictive precedent on asylum and other matters.
