Human Rights Watch -- US: Agents Block, Mistreat Mexican Asylum Seekers, Next Administration's Policies Would Worsen US Abuse at the Border

Human Rights Watch has released a new report. Some highlights:
  • US Border Patrol agents are denying asylum access to families fleeing violence in Mexico, treating them abusively and dismissively, and returning them to Mexico, in violation of US and international human rights law.
  • Human Rights Watch warns the next administration's policies would worsen US abuse at the border and recommends Border Patrol agents should be trained to respect the right to seek asylum, treat people humanely, and communicate in a language they understand.
  • The report is based on 40 recent interviews at the border.
