Mapping Sanctuary

When speaking to individuals who work with migrants traveling from the Northern Triangle to the U.S. border, they've oft mentioned how migrants relay information about good (safe) places to find shelter along the way. Somehow, in my mind, I pictured chalk marks on wooden posts, a la the Great Depression and boxcar hoppers. Or else I thought of my own travels in my youth, looking at maps posted in railway stations and city squares, trying to memorize an unfamiliar route.

I shouldn't have been surprised that this is not the way of things at all. I mean, we're in the world of smart phones, What's App groups, text chains, and endless online information.

Even more interesting to me was finding an honest-to-goodness map at Guadalajara's El Refugio Casa del Migrante. It's paper, though it feels slick. Perhaps it is somehow water-proofed or water-resistant. If folds up small and has a plethora of key information on both sides.

Check it out:

Instructions are in Portuguese. They were probably destinated for Brazilian migrants
