Dec. 2023: This American Life Talks to USCIS Officers

One of my students pointed me to the following episode of This American Life: The Cavalry Is Not Coming (When you realize that help is not on the way, what do you do next?). Act 2 of the episode (32 mins in length) is entitled Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses...Or Don't.

An NPR producer got usual access to USCIS asylum offers and interviewed them about immigration under President Biden. The officers' names and voices are changed, and their quotes are presented by voice actors. So it feels like you're hearing from the officers themselves.

There are so many golden nuggets in this piece. I particularly like this commentary from the NPR producer: "This next person, I'll call Lisa. She works in refugee services. She was also the only official who didn't swear during her interview." Oh, snap.

You could use clips or the whole audio to bring USCIS into your class--something that can be hard to do, especially for those of us who aren't located in big cities or on the border.
