Texas National Guard Blocks U.S. Border Officers from Accessing Border

Aarón Torres and Joseph Morton for the Dallas Morning News ( Download Texas National Guard blocks federal agents from k… ) reports that "the Biden administration accused Texas officials of blocking Border Patrol access to an important stretch of the U.S-Mexico border.  The U.S. Justice Department complained that Texas National Guard troops fenced off Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, blocking federal agents from the only safe and accessible boat ramp for that section of the Rio Grande. The state also erected razor
wire along 2.5 miles of the river, restricting federal ability to position mobile surveillance trucks or access a staging site to evaluate migrants apprehended in the area, the agency said."

The Justice Department has informed the U.S. Supreme Court of the state of Texas's actions in a filing in a case challenging state immigration enforcement action's alleged interference with the U.S. government's immigration actions.

The following is a statement from Congressman Joaquin Castro on Governor Abbott’s obstruction of U.S. immigration enforcement:

"Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement in response to multiple reports that Texas state officials are blocking U.S. Border Patrol agents from conducting their duties and enforcing U.S. immigration law along the banks of the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass, Texas:

This is unprecedented interference by a governor and state government in federal immigration enforcement. Governor Abbott is interfering with Border Patrol’s ability to do its job and his actions are making the situation at the border worse.

Governor Abbott’s political stunts are disrupting the lives of American citizens and small business owners in Eagle Pass, and there is no evidence that Operation Lone Star has made any meaningful impact on migration at all.”

Update Jan. 14);  Actions have consequences -- even deaths.  Here is a Statement from Congressman Castro on Migrant Deaths Near Shelby Park  View Online:

SAN ANTONIO — Today, Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the following statement following reports that a mother and her two children drowned after Texas officials refused to allow federal Border Patrol agents to access the Rio Grande River:

“This is what Operation Lone Star looks like on the ground. Texas officials blocked U.S. Border Patrol agents from doing their job and allowed two children to drown in the Rio Grande.

“Governor Abbott’s inhumanity has no limit. Everyone who enables his cruelty has blood on their hands.”

This recent development in Texas, where the National Guard is reported to have restricted access for U.S. border officers, brings forth complex questions about the intersection of state and federal responsibilities in immigration management. It's crucial to maintain a balance between securing our borders and ensuring that the rights of those seeking asylum are respected.

Understanding the intricacies of these situations is essential for fostering a comprehensive dialogue on immigration policies. How can state-level efforts complement federal strategies without compromising the efficiency of border operations?

Moreover, discussions about collaboration and communication between state and federal agencies become pivotal in situations like these. Finding common ground is essential for a cohesive approach to border security, one that upholds the values of fairness and justice.

As we navigate through these nuanced issues, it's my hope that both state and federal authorities can work collaboratively to address border challenges while upholding the principles that our nation stands for.
