Controversial John Eastman retires from Chapman
Professor (and former Dean) John Eastman has taken some most dubious immigration and immigration-related positions, including questioning Kamala Harris eligibility to be President, arguing that birthright citizenship was not required by the U.S. Constitution, and more. Brooke Staggs and Andre Mouchard for the Orange County Register report on the circumstances surrounding the mid-academic year retirement of Professor Eastman.
Last week, Eastman spoke to crowd of Trump supporters just before they stormed the U.S. Capitol and temporarily stopped Congress from approving the Electoral College tally. In addition, the New York Times reported on January 12 that Eastman was in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump the day before the Capitol violence, arguing to Vice President Mike Pence that Pence had the power to block certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.
Hundreds of students and professors at Chapman had called for Eastman’s dismissal. According to the article. Chapman and Eastman negotiated his exit from the university.
Eastman had beens on leave from Chapman while serving as a visiting professor at the University of Colorado Boulder (not the law school apparently. Citing low enrollment, the University of Colorado Boulder recently canceled the courses that Eastman was scheduledcto teach.
