Immigrant of the Day: Toyin Ojih Odutola (Nigeria, Visual Artist)

OdutolaAs He Watched Him Walk Away, art and image by Toyin Ojih Odutola (2020);
colored pencil and graphite on Dura-Lar

Artist Toyin Ojih Odutola was born in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, educated in the United States (BA, University of Alabama; MFA, California College of the Arts), and now lives in New York. She describes her work as "multimedia drawings on various surfaces, which examine the malleability of identity through ecclectic modes of story-telling."

CNN has a lovely spotlight on Odutola's work and her current show at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City: Tell Me A Story, I Don't Care If It's True. Odutola explains that this exhibition fits in her with prior work, examining "the unreliability of how a story is presented via text and/or image, which meanings prevail, and what is conjured from the juxtapositions."
