Americans abroad and unable to return due to travel restrictions

The State Department is issuing level 4 travel advisories to Americans abroad to not travel and return to the US while they can, in light of the covid-10 pandemic. But some cannot. MSNBC News' Steve Patterson explains in a video how the US State Department is trying to resolve the issue of Americans stranded abroad as countries begin to close their borders amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of these travellers were on vacation and others were students, humantarian workers, and doctors. The process of bringing back Americans can be slow and complicated and has required waits amid mounting frustration on the part of travellers.

The State Department says it is organizing repatriation flights for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are having trouble leaving Morocco because of travel restrictions prompted to fight the coronavirus crisis. US travellers have been critical of the slow response from the US.

Many travellers are stranded in Latin American countries such as Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, and Argentina as well. Flight from Peru are being arranged.

Concerns are rising for US travellers in Canada and Mexico as well, with the recent restrictions of those borders to essential travel.

In an ironic twist, where repatriations have been permitted, the same planes used for deportations are being deployed.
