Early this morning, police in Essex, U.K., discovered 39 migrants dead in the trailer of an 18-wheeler. (BBC, CNN) Indications are that the migrants came from Bulgaria and entered the United Kingdom through Holyhead in Wales before heading into England.
This convoluted journey appears designed to avoid security checks at other, more direct routes.
Just a few months ago, we noted the debate among migrants about trying to enter the UK by dingy (across the English channel) or by lorry, and how one family tried 20 (yes, 20) times to enter the UK. The country remains an incredibly desirable landing point for migrants.
As for the deaths in Essex, police have taken the truck driver into custody pending murder charges.
