Call for Proposals for Southeastern Immigration Studies Association 2020 Conference in Charleston, SC.

Current Trends in Immigration Research and Activism

Host: Southeastern Immigration Studies Association (A coalition of scholars from the University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Auburn University, The Citadel, and College of Charleston)

Date: Feb. 20-22, 2020

This year’s conference, entitled "Current Trends in Immigration Research and Activism," will be jointly hosted by the College of Charleston and The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

This conference promises to bring together interdisciplinary perspectives from scholars, practitioners, and community-based advocates to discuss pressing contemporary issues related to immigration in the Southeast. We intend to focus on the advocacy and community organizing efforts in the panels and presentations. While we are located and focus on issues in the Southeast, we invite comparative analysis across regions in the U.S., as well as proposals from scholars and practitioners in other areas of the U.S. who can speak to contemporary immigration issues in their communities. Given this broad scope, we invite proposals related to an array of topics, including:

Anti-immigrant policies and analysis
Immigration reform
Immigrants and identity
Belonging
Collective resistance
Community-based organizations and immigrant networks
Economics
Faith-based organizations and immigrant networks
Geography
Sanctuary cities/campuses
Racial / ethnic dynamics among/between immigrants
DACA
Immigrant detention and deportation
Immigration and education
Public health

We encourage multiple methods of analysis, including: policy analysis, conceptual, qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods, and collaborative, practitioner-focused, or community-based research.

Proposals should be no longer than 500 words and provide details on the project/study, including aims/purpose, methods of inquiry, and significance to the study of immigration.

Please submit proposals by October 1st at 12pm EST. Notification of acceptance will be sent out no later than November 30th. Registration for full-time faculty will be $150. For graduate students and part-time faculty, the registration will be $75. The event will be free for community advocates and undergraduate students. Given that this is the first conference for this organization, we encourage all attendees to become charter members as this will give them the opportunity to vote on the charter and elect officers at the conference.
