In "What the Trump administration must do to get a grip on the border crisis" in USA Today, Jayson Ahern and Michael Chertoff offer policy recommendations on addressing the current situation on the US/Mexico border. Chertoff is the former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Ahern is the , former acting head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Their proposals include
(1) creating opportunities for economic development in northern triangle countries,
(2) working with Mexico to crack down on criminal organizations and smugglers,
(3) using resources more effectively to “humanely manage the flow of migrants” already in the U.S., and
(4) hiring more immigration judges.
In short, “we must look beyond the border region itself to understand where we can make strategic investments and find policy solutions that will garner permanent results. To that end, we must tackle the root causes at each stage of the migration journey.”
