A couple weeks back, professional basketball fans focused on the 2016 National Basketball Association draft of players. NBA News reports that international players feature prominently in the draft. Australian-born Ben Simmons was the No. 1 pick by the Philadelphia 76ers. Simmons is the third international player selected No. 1 in the last four years.
A record-setting 14 of the 30 picks of the first round would turn out to be players from outside the United States. Eight of the 14 lottery picks were international players as well, including six in the top 10. In total, 26 of the 60 names called on draft night were foreign-born.
