Hirono's Attempt to Save Families

From the Asian American Justice Center:

AAJC Joins 200 Groups in Support of Sen. Hirono's Pro-Family Immigration Amendments
WASHINGTON--The Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), a member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, along with two hundred civil rights, immigration advocates, Latino, Asian Pacific American, and faith organizations sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee members in support of Sen. Mazie Hirono's (D-Hawaii) pro-family immigration amendments.
"We commend Sen. Hirono for her steadfast leadership on this issue. Her amendments rightfully acknowledge the many economic and societal contributions that family immigrants have made to this country," said Mee Moua, president and executive director of AAJC. "While we all understand the urgency in fixing our broken immigration system, we must not create broken families in the process."
The Senate Judiciary Committee has been marking up S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. "The bipartisan bill is a strong starting point for reforming our broken immigration system, but we are concerned that some of the proposed changes will undermine our long-held values of family unity," the letter states. "Protecting and strengthening our current family-based immigration system is good economic policy for the United States. [...] Family-based immigrants foster innovation and development of new businesses that create jobs for American workers."
The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to begin debating these amendments as early as tomorrow. The letter demonstrates the strong broad-based support for the family-based immigration system. "Our legal immigration system is not a zero sum game; it can accommodate these dual values that are important to all Americans."
