Obama Selects Senator Joe Biden as Running Mate

It is "old" news now but Senator Barack Obama has selected Senator Joe Biden as his running mate.  I would be interested in what our readers think about Biden on immigration issues.  Any thoughts?

Here is the Obama message to supporters about his VP pick:

The Next Vice President

Today at 1:31am
Friend --

I have some important news, and I'm pleased to share it with you first.

I've chosen Joe Biden to be my running mate.

Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois -- the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago.

I'm excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can't do this alone. We need your help to keep building this movement for change.

Please let Joe know that you're glad he's part of our team. Share your personal welcome note and we'll make sure he gets it:

Thanks for your support,

Barack

Rated 8% by USBC, indicating an open-border stance.
Biden scores 8% by USBC on immigration issues

OnTheIssues.org interprets the 2005-2006 USBC scores as follows:

* 0%-30%: open-border stance (approx. 197 members)
* 30%-70%: mixed record on open borders (approx. 70 members)
* 70%-100%: sealed-border stance (approx. 202 members)

So that's bottom decile (or top) depending what side you're on. He's made some factually incorrect statements and also some confusing, contradictory ones. A few excerpts from the link:
------------------

"The majority of the people here undocumented--60%--are not Spanish speaking."

Way off.

-------------------

Q: In the absence of comprehensive immigration reform, do you support driver's licenses for illegal immigrants?

A: No.
----------------------

Q: Would you allow "sanctuary cities" to ignore the federal law and provide sanctuary to these immigrants?

A: The reason that cities ignore the federal law is the fact that there is no funding at the federal level to provide for the kind of enforcement at the federal level you need. This administration's been fundamentally derelict in not funding any of the requirements that are needed even to enforce the existing law.

Q: So would you allow those cities to ignore the federal law?

A: No
------------------------
Q: Do you believe in this debate over immigration that we're talking about jobs that Americans won't do?

A: Let's get it straight. Americans will do any job if you pay them properly. That doesn't mean we don't need guest workers; we do.

FROM America's Voice: www.americasvoiceonline.org

Senator Biden: A Strong Supporter of Comprehensive Immigration Reform

With Immigrant and Latino Votes Up for Grabs, Choice is Important

"Senator Joe Biden is a man of principle who gets immigration reform," said Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America's Voice. "As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he has been a strong, consistent and unwavering supporter of common sense immigration reform. Biden understands, as do the majority of Americans, that the immigration system is broken and the current Administration has failed miserably to solve the problem. Obama and Biden know that it is up to the next President and Congress to solve this issue once and for all.

"This is a defining election for immigrant voters, particularly Latino voters who have surged to the polls in record numbers during the Presidential primaries," continued Sharry. " The choice of Biden as a strong supporter of immigration reform will not be lost on the immigrant voting community."
