Now that the N.Y. Times has raised the issue (after we did but who is watching), the papers, blogs, and public are chattering about whether John McCain is constitutionally eligibile to be President of these United States. The Washington Post reports that Senator (and, I am afraid to say this, frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for President) Barack Obama will co-sponsor legislation introduced Thursday by Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) designed to ensure that John McCain can become president, even though he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. The U.S. Constitution requires that a U.S. president be a "natural-born citizen." McCaskill's bill seeks to expressly establish the eligibility of anyone born to a U.S. citizen who is serving overseas as an active or reserve member of the U.S. armed forces. McCain's father was a Navy officer serving in the Panama Canal Zone when McCain was born there in 1936.
