Opposition Grows to Senate Bill

Groups that generally support th erights of immigrants have voiced deep concerns with the Senate immigrtaion reform bill.

Today, the Hispanic Federation (HF), Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC), National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and William C. Velazquez Institute (WCVI), will hold a press conferrence in our Washington D.C. to voice their serious objections to the recently announced White House-Senate immigration proposal. These organizations have come together under the banner of National Latino Congreso, a coalition of hundreds of organizations that collectively represents and serves tens of millions of Latinos. Last week, the conveners of National Latino Congreso sent an open letter to federal legislators stating that the "proposed White House-Senate immigration deal is taking the American people in the wrong direction" and calling on our nation's leaders to "quickly change course and embrace a much more inclusive, just and pragmatic immigration reform construct".

The National Immigration Law Center has released a statement that the deal that Senate negotiators have consummated is a step in the wrong direction. Although the deal includes the DREAM Act and AgJOBS and promises significant short-term benefits for many undocumented immigrants, the nation's experience suggests that the rest of the provisions would have dire long-term consequences for both immigrants and citizens.
