Nanny State Index 2023

Christopher Snowdon (Institute of Economic Affairs), Nanny State Index 2023 (2023):

The Nanny State Index 2023 reveals the UK as one of the most authoritarian countries in Europe regarding regulations on food, soft drinks, tobacco, and alcohol. The UK stands out with the most restrictive tobacco regulations and second most stringent food and drink rules. Despite ranking mid-table for alcohol restrictions, it boasts some of the highest alcohol taxes. Notably, the UK and Ireland exhibit the most liberal policies on e-cigarettes. Overall, the UK's standing has worsened, ranking as the 11th worst country for lifestyle restrictions among 30 nations. Turkey tops the list as the most restrictive, trailed by Norway and Lithuania, while Germany, Czechia, and Italy are recognized for their more liberal policies.
