Panelists will model and share various approaches to teaching these topics both as a stand-alone course and as a part of other family law courses.
Moderator: Jeffrey Dodge
Panelists: Stephanie Tang, Shanta Trivedi, and Sarah Katz & Corey Best (co-presenters)
Law and the Political Participation of Children and Youth
4:30-6:00 pm, Moscone Center, Room 155 (Upper Mezzanine Level South)
Co-sponsored by the Sections on Family and Juvenile Law, Education Law, and Civil Rights. A description is below. Hope to see you there.
From climate change to immigration to gun violence, children and youth are often leading the movement for change. Despite having no right to vote and little economic power in the political arena, young people are increasingly pressing government and community leaders to address the existential challenges facing our world. This program explores the legal and regulatory framework around youth political participation. Speakers will address the benefits of youth participation (to both youth and their communities), the risks and challenges that youth face, and the opportunities for law and policy reform that can support young people's civic engagement.
Speakers:
Ewan Barker Plummer, San Francisco Youth Commission
Sarah Medina Camiscoli, Rutgers Law School
Janel George, Georgetown University Law Center
Barbara Stark, Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University
David B. Thronson, Michigan State University College of Law
Moderator: Jonathan Todres, Georgia State University College of Law
