Australia: How Initial Contributions Affect A Family Law Property Settlement?

Initial contributions are any contributions (both financial and non-financial) that were made by either one of the parties at the start of the relationship.

There is no 'strict formula' applied when determining the weight that initial contributions have in a property settlement matter, rather it is taken on a case-by-case basis.

When deciding cases, judges consider particular facts to each case. Factors to be considered can be who brought the initial significant contributions; whether there is a continuance of contribution; who contributes to the later growth of the value; and whether the contributions would be overstated given the outcome of the decision.
