Proxy Marriages on the Increase in Montana

Did you know that in Montana you can get married by proxy?

Two people can stand in for a couple in a legal ceremony.

Some states allow for a single-proxy marriage.

But Montana is a double-proxy marriage state, which means neither party has to be present.

Tom and Teresa Kennedy operate Armed Forces Proxy Marriages out of their home in Bigfork.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kennedy's have seen a huge increase in proxy marriage requests.

Last year the service had about 700 proxy weddings.

This year the couple says that number has just about tripled.

"I think our record," said Tom, who is a minister, " was 13 calls in one night."

Almost all of the requests are military- related.
