Daily Pic: Mary Beth Tinker on Tour
Mary Beth Tinker - - - of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (1969) - - - is going "on tour" to promote "to promote youth voices, free speech
and a free press" and the First Amendment. On the Tinker Tour blog, Mary Beth Tinker writes, "I made a difference with just a simple, black armband. Can
you imagine what a shy 13-year-old could do today with all of the
extraordinary speech tools available? We look forward to
encouraging her — and sharing real-life stories about how students are
keeping the First Amendment alive today." (italics and bold in original).
The iconic photo of Mary Beth Tinker shows her and her brother holding the black armbands they wore to school that were at issue in Tinker:
