The Institute for Professional Leadership (IPL) is a unique academic program that focuses on guiding students in identifying and developing their leadership skills and professional values, in conjunction with constructing a successful career plan. The IPL offers a rich selection of courses and programs designed to prepare students to be lawyer leaders within the profession and beyond, promotes active community engagement through pro bono opportunities, and serves as a platform for research and scholarly debate in the leadership field. The Director will provide vision and oversight for the IPL’s existing programs and activities and will be responsible for expanding and enhancing the IPL’s reach and stature. The Director will be an important part of the College of Law’s administrative leadership. We aim to enhance these substantial and growing technology-related activities by hiring a Law & Technology Resident Fellow. We seek a recent law graduate interested in studying and teaching about the impact artificial intelligence (AI) will have on the legal field, from the impact on legal education to the impact on legal practice and legislative reform. We are specifically interested in candidates who would connect our students and our faculty both with new technologies and with tech startups in Miami.
In order to provide a space for training of and experimentation by the law school community, the initial Fellow also will be responsible for designing and then setting up an Artificial Intelligence Technology Lab—which could be real or virtual—that will, among other things, support faculty in their courses and research. The Fellow would be expected to teach one technology-related course, subject to approval by the Vice Dean and the law school’s Curriculum Committee, once the Lab is functional.
Applicants must have completed their J.D. degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship. Experience with Artificial Intelligence as it pertains to law and law practice, or optionally a degree in Computer Science or a related field, would also be helpful. The fellowship begins on August 1 and lasts for one year; a Fellow in residence may apply for a second year of support.

As many of you know, I have had the honor and privilege of being the Interim Director of the Institute for Professional Leadership (IPL) at The University of Tennessee College of Law for the past three academic years. The IPL is a special part of UT Law. As the home of an academic program that ties various parts of the traditional law curriculum together, the IPL benefits students with a wide variety of post-graduation goals--helping them to prepare themselves for the inevitable leadership spaces they will occupy in their professional and personal lives.
I have served as Interim Director at the IPL while continuing with a full teaching schedule, scholarship agenda, and service load. It now is time for me to step back and allow someone else to lead the IPL--someone who will devote full time to carrying out its mission. Accordingly, we are looking for a permanent Director for the IPL. The position announcement can be found here.
As you can see from the position announcement, the permanent Director will be a member of the law faculty, either tenure-track or non-tenure-track. The qualifications section of the announcement is copied in below, for your ease of reference.
Required Experience and Abilities
- Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

A few months ago, I asked whether people in the tech industry were the most powerful people in the world. This is part II of that post.
I posed that question after speaking at a tech conference in Lisbon sponsored by Microsoft. They asked me to touch on business and human rights and I presented the day after the company announced a ten billion dollar investment in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Back then, we were amazed at what ChatGPT 3.5 could do. Members of the audience were excited and terrified- and these were tech people.
And that was before the explosion of ChatGPT4.
I've since made a similar presentation about AI, surveillance, social media companies to law students, engineering students, and business people. In the last few weeks, over 10,000 people including Elon Musk, have called for a 6-month pause in AI training systems. If you don't trust Musk's judgment (and the other scientists and futurists), trust the "Godfather of AI," who recently quit Google so he could speak out on the dangers, even though Google has put out its own whitepaper on AI development. Watch the 60 Minutes interview with the CEO of Google.
Just yesterday, the White House held a summit with key AI stakeholders to talk about AI governance.
Between AI-generated photos winning competitions, musicians creating songs simulating real artists' voices, students using generative AI to turn in essays that fool professors, and generative AI's ability to hallucinate (come up with completely wrong answers that look correct), what can we as lawyers do? Are our jobs at risk? Barrons has put out a list. IBM has paused hiring because it believes it can gain efficiencies though AI. Goldman Sachs has said that 300 million jobs might be affected by this technology. I'm at a conference for entrepreneurs and the CEO of a 100-million dollar company said that he has reassigned and is re-skilling 90% of his marketing team because he can use AI for most of what they do.
Should we be excited or terrified? I've been stressing to lawyers and my students that we need to understand this technology to help develop the regulations around it as well to wrestle with the thorny legal and ethical issues that arise. Here are ten questions, courtesy of ChatGPT4, that lawyers should ask themselves:
- Do I understand the basic principles and mechanics of AI, including machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing, to make informed decisions about its use in my legal practice?
- How can AI tools be used effectively and ethically to enhance my practice, whether in legal research, document review, contract drafting, or litigation support, while maintaining high professional standards?
- Are the AI tools and technologies I use compliant with relevant data protection and privacy regulations, such as GDPR and CCPA, and do they adequately protect client confidentiality and sensitive information?
- How can I ensure that the AI-driven tools I utilize are unbiased, transparent, and fair, and what steps can I take to mitigate potential algorithmic biases that may compromise the objectivity and fairness of my legal work?
- How can I obtain and document informed consent from clients when using AI tools in my practice, ensuring that they understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives associated with these technologies?
- What are the intellectual property implications of using AI, particularly concerning AI-generated content, inventions, and potential copyright or trademark issues that may arise?
- How can I assess and manage potential liability and accountability issues stemming from the use of AI tools, including understanding the legal and ethical ramifications of AI-generated outputs in my practice?
- How can I effectively explain and defend the use of AI-generated evidence, analysis, or insights in court, demonstrating the validity and reliability of the methods and results to judges and opposing counsel?
- What measures should I implement to supervise and train my staff, including paralegals and support personnel, in the responsible use of AI tools, ensuring that ethical and professional standards are maintained throughout the practice?
- How can I stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI technology and best practices, ensuring that I continue to adapt and evolve as a legal professional in an increasingly technology-driven world?

The University of Tennessee College of Law is accepting applications for our new Clinical Teaching Fellowship to begin in the summer of 2023. This two-year fellowship will prepare talented lawyers and aspiring clinicians with at least 2 years of practice experience to become full-time clinical faculty at U.S law schools. The Clinical Teaching Fellow will work alongside and learn from current full-time clinical faculty who teach in the College of Law’s Legal Clinic. The Clinical Teaching Fellow will be immersed in all aspects of clinical teaching from learning clinical pedagogy to supervising law students on their casework. The UT Law Clinical Teaching Fellow will also develop a research agenda and begin working on a scholarly article in preparation for entering the law school teaching market. The fellow will receive training in clinical teaching methods, supervision when working with students on cases, and guidance in developing legal scholarship with faculty mentors.
We seek a Clinical Teaching Fellow to begin in the summer of 2023, and to work with one of the following Clinics:

- Membership in a U.S. state bar and willingness to petition for admission to the Tennessee Bar prior to the start date of the fellowship. Tennessee allows lawyers teaching in a law school clinical program to waive into the bar.

Such courses could include real estate finance, construction, oil and gas/alternative energy, debt financing, business succession planning, individual or entity income taxation, nonprofit organizations, digital/cybersecurity, elder law/special needs, retirement, international business transactions, international trade, consumer protection, bankruptcy, creditors remedies, negotiable instruments/payment systems, franchising, sports law, healthcare.
Baylor Law seeks a lecturer who will have responsibility for teaching in the Legal Analysis, Research & Communications (LARC) program. Responsibilities include working collaboratively with other faculty members of the Baylor Law Writing Program to create, teach and grade assignments for the LARC 4 course (Transactional Drafting) and coordinating all of the writing efforts across all three years of the curriculum to ensure consistency and best management of resources. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of transactional legal writing experience, including drafting and analyzing a variety of different contracts and business entity governing documents.
Baylor Law seeks a lecturer with substantial experience in persuasive writing and litigation drafting, including drafting appellate briefs and a variety of different pleadings, trial motions, and similar work product. The selected individual will have responsibility for teaching in the Legal Analysis, Research & Communications (LARC) program, specifically LARC 3 (persuasive writing) and LARC 5 (litigation drafting). He or she will teach several sections of both courses each year and will be one of several LARC 3 instructors. With respect to the LARC 5 course, the candidate will be expected to collaborate and coordinate project planning with instructors for the LARC 4 course (transactional drafting). Thus, the ideal candidate will also have experience in analyzing and drafting a variety of contracts. The candidate will share additional responsibilities as well, such as periodically serving as a judge in the Practice Court program and collaborating with other legal writing faculty members to create problems for writing competitions.
Part-time Temporary Adjunct
Baylor Law seeks a temporary adjunct to teach a section of the LARC 3 course, a course on persuasive writing, and LARC 5 course, a course that focuses on litigation drafting. The candidate should have experience in drafting appellate briefs or producing similar work product, or litigation drafting, including drafting a variety of different pleadings, trial motions, and similar work product.

Yale Law School seeks applicants for two clinical fellowships in the Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization, within Yale Law School's clinical program. These Fellowships are two-year positions with a third-year option, beginning on or about July 1, 2023, and are designed for lawyers with at least three years of practice who are considering a career in law school teaching. Each fellow will work with a different clinic. Responsibilities include representing clients, supervising students, assisting in teaching classes, and pursuing a scholarship agenda. Fellows also have an option to co-teach a section of a six-week fall program for first-year students, Introduction to Legal Analysis and Writing, for additional compensation. Candidates must be prepared to apply for admission to the Connecticut bar (candidates may qualify for admission without examination). All work will be conducted with the support of the clinical faculty and will focus on providing legal assistance to low-income and civil rights clients and organizations.
The Jerome N. Frank Legal Services Organization is committed to building a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty and staff to teach and work in a multicultural environment. Veterans Legal Services Clinic (VLSC)
VLSC is a semester-long, in-house clinic whose students represent veterans and their organizations in VA benefits, record correction, and civil rights litigation in administrative, state, and federal courts, and in state and federal policy advocacy.
Illustrative cases include representation of individual veterans seeking disability compensation benefits for injuries incurred during military service, in initial applications, administrative appeals, and judicial review in federal court; former service members in applications to upgrade a less-than-honorable discharge before Defense Department boards and on judicial review in federal court; plaintiffs in federal civil rights cases, such as a woman raped while a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Black veterans seeking reparations for historic discrimination in VA benefits programs; three nation-wide classes of Iraq and Afghanistan Era veterans who received less-than-fully-honorable discharges, despite having PTSD or related conditions attributable to their military service; a nation-wide class of U.S. Air Force veterans exposed to radiation after cleaning up two hydrogen bombs accidentally dropped on Spain in 1966, in the first appeals class action certified in the history of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims; and local and national veterans' organizations in campaigns to address gender discrimination in congressional nominations to the military service academies; curb retaliation against servicemembers who report sexual harassment or assault; and make veterans with bad paper eligible for state veterans' benefits.

Housing and Community & Economic Development Clinics
The Community & Economic Development (CED) is a semester-long, in-house clinic that provides transactional legal services to clients seeking to promote economic opportunity and mobility. CED's clients include affordable housing developers, community development financial institutions, farms and farmer's markets, fair housing advocates, and neighborhood associations. CED's legal services help our clients to expand access to financial services, bring arts institutions and grocery stores to chronically under-resourced communities, break down barriers to affordable housing development in high-opportunity communities, promote access to healthy foods, and facilitate entrepreneurship among low-income people.
The Housing Clinic is a semester-long, in-house clinic that represents tenants facing evictions and substandard housing conditions; homeowners facing foreclosures and seeking affirmative relief for illegal behavior by mortgage lenders and servicers; and individuals and advocates in affirmative fair housing litigation.
On behalf of our clients, our students represent clients in federal and state courts; negotiate and draft contracts; provide advice on the tax consequences of deal structures and entity choices; structure and carry out real estate transactions; represent borrowers and lenders in financings; engage in legislative and regulatory advocacy; form for-profit and not-for-profit entities; and resolve land use and environmental issues. In addition to representing clients, students in their first semester of the clinic take a seminar which covers federal, state and local policies affecting urban and suburban places; substantive law in tax, real estate development, and corporate governance; and transactional and regulatory lawyering skills, such as negotiation and drafting contracts.

The University of Michigan Law School is seeking a clinical teaching fellow in its Zell Entrepreneurship Clinic (ZEC). Law students in the ZEC provide transactional legal services to early-stage startups and play a significant role in the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Ann Arbor. The College of Business Administration at Central Michigan University invites applications for one or more entrepreneurship faculty members to begin service at the rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor on August 21, 2023.
CMU anticipates the successful applicant will take a leadership role in the department. This could include serving as the Department Chairperson, serving as the Director of the Master in Entrepreneurial Ventures (MEV) program, or service in another administrative capacity. A reduced teaching load is available for successful applicants serving in one of these roles.
Tenure-track faculty are generally expected to teach three courses per semester, maintain an active research agenda, and actively participate in service activities. Courses may be face-to-face or online and at the undergraduate or graduate level. Faculty may also: advise students; engage in assessment of learning activities; help develop and promote CMU’s entrepreneurship offerings; support CMU’s New Venture Competition (NVC) and other extra-curricular initiatives; and strengthen partnerships on and off campus. Candidates must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
Candidates must have a terminal degree: (i) a Ph.D. or D.B.A in entrepreneurship or a related business field (from an AACSB accredited institution); or, (ii) a J.D. Lecturer (Transactional Drafting)
Candidates must possess a juris doctor. The selected individual will have responsibility for teaching in the Legal Analysis, Research & Communications (LARC) program. Responsibilities include working collaboratively with other faculty members of the Baylor Law Writing Program to create, teach and grade assignments for the LARC 4 course (Transactional Drafting) and coordinating all of the writing efforts across all three years of the curriculum to ensure consistency and best management of resources. The selected individual will have responsibility for teaching in the Legal Analysis, Research & Communications (LARC) program, specifically LARC 3, our required persuasive writing course, and LARC 5, our litigation drafting course. He or she will teach several sections of both courses each year. He or she will be one of several LARC 3 instructors. With respect to the LARC 5 course, the candidate will be expected to collaborate and coordinate project planning with instructors for the LARC 4 (transactional drafting). Thus, the ideal candidate will also have experience in analyzing and drafting a variety of contracts. The candidate will share additional responsibilities as well, such as periodically serving as a judge in the Practice Court program and collaborating with other legal writing faculty members to create problems for writing competitions.
