Assistant/Associate Professor Director of Bar Success - University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, William S. Richardson School of Law
Job Description:
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, William S. Richardson School of Law seeks a tenure-track faculty member to lead our Bar Success initiatives beginning in August 2025. We are hiring for an Assistant Professor (F3-11) or Associate Professor (F4-11) with expertise in Bar Success. We welcome candidates who, in addition to this field, have expertise in Legal Writing.
In the area of Bar Success, the Law School seeks someone who is able to implement a comprehensive program that begins upon matriculation and carries through the bar examination process beyond graduation, but also an innovator who is immersed in the evidence-based best practices and data-driven studies on how best to prepare students for success in the legal education environment and beyond. The successful candidate will possess demonstrable expertise in this field and a commitment to student success. Additionally, the candidate will actively collaborate with various stakeholders, including the Director of Academic Success, the administration, staff, and faculty, and the legal community.
This is an 11-month position. The Bar Success role will occupy approximately 50% of the new hire’s workload, including administration of the extended bar review courses. The successful candidate will be invited to teach legal writing or other doctrinal courses pertinent to bar preparation, accounting for approximately 25% of their workload. The remaining capacity will be allotted to scholarship and committee service.
Minimum Qualifications:
Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others. For F3 candidates: An outstanding record of academic and/or professional achievement, a Juris Doctor degree or equivalent, and a potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and public service. F4 candidates for the Bar Success position should have the same qualifications, a minimum of four years of experience as Assistant Professor, plus demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and public service. A candidate’s potential for or demonstrated excellence will be assessed based on the ideas and experiences detailed in their teaching statement, research agenda, writing samples, and CV.
Desirable Qualifications:
Demonstrated excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, staff, faculty, alumni, government officials, community members, and members of the bar, and to thrive in multicultural and multidisciplinary contexts.
Demonstrated interest in teaching, scholarship, and/or service that benefits the diverse, multicultural communities of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region.
Demonstrated experience in and commitment to teaching law effectively in a variety of modalities, including in-person, online, and hybrid.
Demonstrated experience and/or an ability (or proficiency) to analyze data and measure the efficacy of educational interventions needed to assess, develop, revise, and implement bar success initiatives.
Demonstrated ability and/or interest in teaching Legal Writing.
