The mother and grandmother of Donald Sterling have been paying their property taxes on two properties in Los Angeles, California. The problem is that they have been dead for a long time, for over 30 years. The taxes have been paid by money order to the county treasurer and tax collector under the names of Sterling’s deceased mother and grandmother and with a return address that belongs to the apartment where Sterling lives. The properties are still in the women’s names despite state law requiring that the county assessor be notified when the homeowner dies so the property value may be reassessed. The reassessment would have likely increased the property taxes and there is not currently record of either women going through probate proceedings in the county.
