6 Tips for Maximizing Social Security

Social SecurityWhile Social Security benefits are commonly included in retirement planning, there are 6 lesser known facts about Social Security that are important to know for maximizing benefits, which include:

  1. Social Security disability payments are from a separate program then other SS benefits
  2. Minor children may be eligible for survivor benefits when a parent dies
  3. There are unique restrictions for public sector employees
  4. A divorced spouse may be eligible for survivor benefits as well
  5. The survivor benefits for a spouse depend on when the deceased spouse and the surviving spouse claim SS benefits.
  6. Social Security taxes are not indexed for inflation
