As I have previously discussed, the Kansas Department for Children and Families sued William Marotta for child support because he donated his sperm to a same-sex couple after responding to a Craigslist ad. The same- sex couple split up and the female partner with custody of the child was struggling financially because of an injury. She petitioned the state for financial assistance. The department insists that it is typical for it to seek out the father when a single mother petitions the state for financial aid, but Marotta's attorney does not believe this is routine. Ben Swinnen, one of Marotta's attorneys, believes the state is pursuing this case to bolster the idea of traditional marriage. “It is a freeze,” he said, “on artificial insemination and alternative family settings.”
