Helping the Newly Bereaved

Grief

How should you help those who have recently lost a loved one?

First of all, asking open-ended questions like “Is there anything I can do?” will not be very helpful.  The bereaved will most likely say “No.”

Instead try offering to do a specific thing at a specific time.  If they still decline, wait a few days and make the same offer again.  Also, offer to visit when other visitors might be thinning.  Make sure you call to make the offer.  Don’t tell them to call you when they are ready.  If you are far away and can’t help, consider donating to their favorite charity or sending a card.

Special thanks to David S. Luber (Florida Probate Attorney) for bringing this article to my attention.
