For the first time in Australia, same-sex marriage has been legalized in the Australian Capital Territory, which hosts the Australian capital of Canberra.
The Liberal-National coalition federal government says it plans to quickly challenge the Marriage Equality Bill as contravening the Commonwealth Marriage Act. Socially-conservative Prime Minister Tony Abbott is seeking to enforce jurisdiction over the matter.
