According to the Government of Dubai, UAE courts will adhere to Sharia regarding inheritance when there is no will in place.
This serves as a warning to expatriates to make a will or face the consequences of Sharia, which many expats are unaware of.
Under Sharia, if the deceased has no sons, the parents and siblings will receive a larger share even if assets are shared between a husband and wife. Wives that have children are entitled to only one-eighth of the estate if there is no will in place. Also, sons receive double what daughters receive.
