This outline is a selective and still evolving review of the history of the federal estate tax. It originated in the context of the attempts to repeal the estate tax in President Clinton’s second term and accelerated with the one-year (2010) “repeal” included in the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001.
