As I have previously discussed, one of the richest men in Maui, Laurence Dorcy, passed away in 2011 leaving behind a wealthy estate. Dorcy left his estate to Hans Kanuha in his will. However, there was an earlier will that left Dorcy's estate to several charities, his friends, and his relatives. Jeffrey Peterson, the trust representative of Dorcy's Trust, and the other beneficiaries under the first will challenged the validity of the second will in court.
Now, the court has come to a decision. and Judge Shackley Raffetto has approved a confidential settlement agreement on April 16, 2012. The court also awarded large attorneys' fees to the lawyers who defended the beneficiaries in the first will. At the end of the day, this trust dispute was the largest that Maui and the State of Hawaii has ever litigated.
