Reports Are That Jack Thompson Disbarred

Multiple sources have reported that Jack Thompson, notorious in is pursuit of the gaming industry for a variety of reasons, has been disbarred.  The Referee appointed by the Florida Supreme Court has submitted a 169 page opinion to the Court in the matter of several bar complaints.  Among them are that respondent Thompson made false statements to a court, ignored court orders barring certain filings, making ex parte communications with a court in contravention of rules and orders, communicating with opposing clients, well, the list goes on and on.  After hearing the case as referee, Judge Dava J. Tunis recommended permanent suspension from practice in Florida and a fine of $43,675.35 to cover the costs of the proceeding.  The Florida Bar had recommended a 10 year suspension.

Judge Tunis found Thompson an unlikely candidate for rehabilitation based on the evidence developed at the hearing and by Mr. Thompson's own conduct at the hearing.  The entire report is available via Kotaku, which broke the story and reports that the Florida Supreme Court has accepted the report and ordered permanent disbarment beginning 30 days from now.  The order does not appear on the Florida Supreme Court's web site as of this writing.  Thompson's response is also available via Kotaku Additional reporting is in Ars Technica, CNET, and Wired.  The text of the report is amazing and could easily be the staple of many a law school ethics class.  You can't make this stuff up.  [MG]
