Bush vows to Veto Hate Crimes Bill
There's an article on his threat here and a second here.
The bill -- I think in the form it passed the house -- is here.
It punishes those who cause bodily injury if, for example, they do so "because of" race, gender, sexual identity, religion and so on.
I'm not sure what I think of it, except that I do find those crimes more morally culpable, but am not sure existing laws wouldn't allow that sort of evidence in, and to be considered, by a jury (no criminal experience at all here).
