Sam Brownback on Abortion
It's about time for another profile of one of our presidential candidates' abortion views. Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have been taken to task in the press (and on this blog) for waffling on the issue (see related posts: Ann Althouse on Giuliani's and Romney's Abortion Views; Michael Dorf on Giuliani's Abortion Views; New York Times on Giuliani's Abortion Views; Mitt Romney on Abortion).
But Senator Sam Brownback (Kansas) hasn't had any trouble staying consistent in his strong opposition to abortion. Here are some quotations that illustrate his position:
“Life is beautiful. A culture of life embodies the beauty of every human life from the moment of conception forward."
“Life is a precious gift. From the moment of conception a unique human being is present. I believe that we should all play a role in seeking to protect and defend every human life. No one should be denied the right to life - certainly not those who are young and defenseless."
"Legislatively, during my time in Congress, I have taken the lead in numerous legislative battles in defense of the sanctity and dignity of every human life from the moment of conception. I have also co-sponsored measures such as the "Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act" and the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act," and I have been the principle sponsor of the "Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act."
Above quotes all from his official Senate website.
On his official campaign website, Brownback doesn't list his abortion position under "Culture and Values" (the way, for example, Romney does: see related post, Mitt Romney on Abortion). He lists it under a separate category, "Life."
According to the LifeSite website, Brownback believes Roe v. Wade is a "tragedy" that must be "overturned."
