Colbert on 501(c)(4) Groups & Secret Politics
The Colbert Report recently did a segment on the ability of donors to give secretly to section 501(c)(4) organizations that then support or oppose candidates as a non-primary activity. It is a great and remarkably accurate description of this issue, although credit for the accuracy may lie in large part with attorney and straight man Trevor Potter, who is with my old firm of Caplin & Drysdale. I showed it to my Not-for-Profit Organizations class earlier this week, who really appreciated it (especially the student whose parent has been on the receiving end of ads paid for by section 501(c)(4) Americans for Prosperity).
