FCC Chair Moves To Roll Back Net Neutrality Rules

FCC Chair Ajit Pai has apparently announced his plan to roll back net neutrality rules, first launched by the agency under the Obama administration and ultimately upheld in a 2016 District of Columbia Circuit ruling, United States Telecom Association v. F.C.C.

The FCC's 2015 Open Internet order, upheld in the 2016 ruling, predicates the agency's authority to promote net neutrality on its ability to classify ISPs as providers of telecommunications services and thus subject to FCC authority. Chair Pai would like to declassify ISPs and allow the Federal Trade Commission to pursue regulation of ISPs in areas in which the agencies overlap (for example, in areas of sale of consumer data).
