The NSA has been collecting thousands of domestic emails, and has been doing so illegally, according to Judge John D. Bates, of the FISA Court (read his opinion here, redacted). The judge told the administration it had misrepresented its activities. A senior official for the Obama Administration indicated that the collection was a result of problems with the technology, that the data had been deleted, and that the court had approved the new standards that the NSA had created.
