The Ivory Tower and the FBI
The Chronicle of Higher Education discusses the debate that has emerged over how to balance academic freedom and national security in the area of biology--specifically, the study of bird flu. Traditionally, scientists have published the results of their research. But governments are now worried that the specifics of such research can assist terrorists.
