Stephen J. Cannell Dies

Following on the losses of legendary actor Tony Curtis on September 29, fifties heartthrob Eddie Fisher on September 22, and actress Gloria Stuart on September 26, we now learn of the death of writer/producer Stephen J. Cannell ("The Rockford Files," "21 Jump Street"). Mr. Cannell graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism and got his start as a writer for the iconic series It Takes a Thief. A number of his shows featured attorneys or detectives, including Ironside, The D.A., Adam-12, Toma, Switch, Baretta, The Rockford Files, Tenspeed and Brown Shoe (a much-underrated series in my opinion), The Greatest American Hero (Ralph's girlfriend was an attorney, remember?) Hardcastle and McCormick (Brian Keith played a retired judge), The A-Team, Wiseguy, 21 Jump Street, The Commish, Renegade, and Silk Stalkings. Mr. Cannell's law-themed series were the stuff of many a grown-up lawyer's teenage years. He will be missed.
