The Senate, under urging from the Obama administration, has voted to put off the national broadcast switchover to digital until June 12, despite warnings that viewers will be very confused. The House votes on similar legislation today. The Nielsen Company estimates that about 6 and a half million households are still not ready to receive only digital signals. The run up to the digital switchover began some three years ago, but viewers, broadcasters and the FCC have felt the heat only relatively recently. A federal program to help the public absorb some of the costs of the switchover has run out of money.
