The House of Lords has voted to eliminate the common law offenses of blasphemy and blasphemous libel in England and Wales by an overwhelming vote (nearly 2 to 1 for). The House of Lords, sitting as a court of appeal, refused earlier this week to hear an action for blasphemy against the BBC for broadcasting "Jerry Springer--The Opera."
